As forestry management and bioenergy production continue to evolve, energy wood harvesting has become an increasingly central part of the forest industry. Efficient, safe and cost-effective recovery of small-diameter wood, logging residue and energy-grade timber requires purpose-built, high-quality tools. The energy grapple is an indispensable aid in this work. It is a versatile, hydraulic work attachment, typically mounted on an excavator or other working machine.
The energy grapple enables tree cutting or felling along with subsequent handling and loading. When it comes to the reliability, durability and performance of energy grapples in demanding conditions, Axer is the name professionals trust — a Finnish pioneer whose products are built on decades of forestry experience.
The Axer Energy Grapple is a pioneering product in its category, with a long history. We have been active in the forest industry for decades, and that solid experience has refined our energy grapple to meet the most demanding use. Product development has been continuous, and we use only the best materials and manufacturing methods. Our vision is to be the best, and that drives everything we do, from design to finished product. The Axer Energy Grapple shows how high quality, cleverly simple implementation and industry-leading components come together in a tool that lasts and performs reliably.
What is an energy grapple and how does it work?
The energy grapple — also known as the energy wood grapple — is designed especially for felling and collecting trees and brush for energy wood or landscaping purposes. It is widely used in a variety of tasks, particularly as an excavator attachment. It works on hydraulic power, where the cutting blade and sturdy jaws cooperate to cut the wood with strong clamping force. The grapple presses the trunk firmly against the blade and severs it.
The main components of an energy grapple are a rugged frame, jaws, a cutting blade, hydraulics and couplings. The frame is designed to withstand high stress, while the jaws hold the tree securely in place, pressing it against the blade during the cut. High cutting force is an Axer hallmark, ensuring even the largest trunks are severed without trouble.
Unique features and benefits of Axer energy grapples
Axer stands out from the competition thanks to several unique features, rooted in our own engineering and long experience:
- Our own cutting cylinders: Our energy grapples use hydraulic cylinders of our own design and production. These cylinders are tailored to each specific energy-grapple model, enabling optimal cutting geometry and effective cutting force. That is key to trouble-free operation even in heavy timber.
- Hardened, replaceable cutting blade: All Axer energy-grapple models feature a hardened cutting blade. A hardened blade withstands high stress and wear exceptionally well. Just as importantly, the blade is removable and replaceable, which simplifies maintenance and ensures that cutting performance always stays at the highest level.
- A range for different machine sizes: We offer energy grapples for excavators across different weight classes — including suitable models for machines under 12 tonnes and above 12 tonnes. Our largest grapples are designed for machines above 30 tonnes, intended for the heavy timber of Europe.
- Heavy-duty HD models: Heavier models for machines above 12 tonnes, such as the Axer 650 HD, feature reinforced frames, jaws and pins. Their extra cutting force and 20 mm thick hardened blade ensure that even very large trees are removed easily. A box-section frame structure further increases durability.
- Two blade configurations: Our energy grapples are available with two different blade configurations: the K model with a bolted blade, and the L model with a patented retractable cutting blade. The L model is particularly versatile, as the retractable blade lets the grapple be used for loading, grubbing and as a normal grapple without using the cutting function.
- Quality materials: Our energy grapples are manufactured using only the best materials and methods, chosen to withstand demanding use and guarantee a long service life.
- Flexibility through accessories: A broad selection of accessories — accumulator units, rotators, tilt mechanisms and limbing blades — lets the energy grapple be tailored to a wide range of working needs. The quick coupler is also easy to swap, so the same grapple can be used on machines of different sizes and brands.
Versatile applications
The energy grapple is an excellent tool for many tasks:
- Forest thinning and first thinnings
- Felling and removing hazard trees from residential areas or difficult locations
- Landscaping and lot clearing
- Storm-damage clearance and similar operations
- Energy wood felling and collection from forests, field edges and roadsides
- Vegetation and brush management on green areas
- Material loading and normal grapple use (with the L model)
